I have to begin with an Editor’s Note.
I have been in Arkansas taking care of my husband’s mother for over a week.I came home late last night and my husband will head back today. This month I can’t focus on this properly or even put in all of your articles.Earlene had to take Jim back to the hospital last Tuesday. He came home Saturday afternoon. She is dealing with a lot too.Thank you for your patience with us.
PROGRAMS

I hope you’re all looking forward to Dr. Janet Noever’s program on March 17th:“Seminole Patchwork as the ‘Mother’ of Quick Quiltmaking.”Dr. Noever will briefly present the background of the Florida Seminole Indians and how and why their patchwork evolved and trace how the Seminole patchwork technique was adopted by the quilt world through the work of Barbara Johannah, leading up to the now-familiar “quick quiltmaking” concept which brought us the rotary cutter and mat and the see-through rulers so many of us depend on today.
Dr. Noever will present some quilts that show ways in which today’s quilters can use Seminole patchwork. She will also have a hand cranked sewing machine, like the ones the Seminoles used to create their masterpieces, for you to try out.
We still have spots open in the Seminole Patchwork workshop Dr. Noever will be teaching on Monday 17 March (starting at 10 am) using her original pattern, “Baby Rattlers.”If you wish to participate in this workshop, email me.
We’re currently having some challenges in scheduling workshop space, so we’re definitely not having a workshop in April and we will probably have a very limited number of workshops for the rest of the year.At the 17 March meeting, I’ll be asking you for input (a survey) on what workshops you would be most interested in having, be thinking about what you *really* want to do.
We will be having a program on 21 April, but I’m still finalizing – look for that information in the April newsletter.
Community ProjectsWilma DeBerryREMINDER:The Community Projects Work Day has been scheduled for March 31. We are to have a dual purpose. One group will work on finishing quilts that have been quilted or are ready to be quilted. One group will work on the drapery needed to display entry quilts at the show in May.Both are very important tasks and need our immediate attention.Because it is so important, we decided to skip the regular 4th Monday which was the day after Easter. We feel we will have a larger work force on March 31.SPECIAL COMMUNITY PROJECT:On April 12 the guild and the Library will co sponsor a community event at the Library. On that day we will demonstrate the construction of a quilt from fabric selection to binding.Janet Bronston has developed a beautiful plan and will need volunteers throughout the day. There will be sign up sheets at the guild meeting on the 17th.We hope to display quilts throughout the library, in the gallery room and in the large conference room where the event will take place. Please contact Wilma or Janet if you wish to participate. The library is providing a lot of publicity and this is truly a time for us to shine in the community.
WAYS AND MEANSAdrianne FoxI have to apologize to you for ducking out as quickly last month, I was so sick I just couldn't stay any longer.I will be there and ready to sell-sell-sell on the 17th!I have lots of new things and am trying to decide just want you want to see/buy this month.I am so excited about the program - I have loved Seminole Patchwork for many years, even before I began quilting.I have heard this is going to be a great program.I have heard Janet Noever does a great program.See you the 17th!!!
Hello fellow quilters. My two small groups are off and running. We have four to six members in each group. We could use more members. If you love flowers, gardens, and quilting - why not combine all your loves in one place.
(1) Thimble and Thistles - meets two nights a month at McFarlin UMC - the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month from 5pm to 9pm, room 401, McFarlin UMC, (4th floor). If you love flowers, either sewing them or planting them, then this is the group for you. Bring your sewing machines and work on what ever you want - or maybe we'll pick a project. We will share quilting and gardening tips.
(2) Needles and Nettles - meets at member's home during the day from noon to 3pm on the 3rd Friday of the month. Bring a sandwich and the host will provide the salad and dessert. We'll work on hand appliqué, bindings, red work, embroidery, or any handwork you have. Visit each other gardens and swap extra plants and quilting tips.
If you are interested, please let me know. Also, please tell someone you know that loves quilting and gardening. My home number is 364-0660, if you want to discuss anything. These are new groups, so they will be very flexible to what the needs of the group.
Thank you so very much, Georjana Mauldin
Cindy Russell formed a new small group that is still open to new members. The group meets in her home in Moore on Friday’s at 10:00.

Join us in the celebration of the 17th Annual National Quilting Day on March 15,2008. Whether you celebrate with your quilting friends or alone, take time to reflecton the rich traditions of quilt making and the contributions to family and community made by quilt makers for many generations.
The NQD logo for 2008 is a block called "Eight Hands Around". In her block reference book, Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, Barbara Brackman cites the first publication of the pattern in 1895 or earlier in the Ladies Art Company #149. LAC is listed as the first mail-order quilt pattern company – another tradition generations of quilters have cherished: shopping from catalogs (and now the Internet) and waiting anxiously for delivery of those special packages!
NQA began sponsoring National Quilting Day with a resolution passed by members attending the 22nd Annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska, in June 1991. The third Saturday in March is officially designated as National Quilting Day, but quilters are flexible and we love a celebration - especially when fabric is involved - so over the years, observance of National Quilting Day has unofficially been expanded to the whole month of March!
NAQG’s quilt show is getting close and now is the time to sign up for Joan Boehrer’s great classes.QUILTS OF THE 2ND CENTURYNorman Area Quilters Guild
