PRESIDENT’S BLOCK Earlene KenderdineI feel like I have been running constantly since the first of the year. In a way, I think I lost January. I want to thank all of you for bearing with me through all of this. I want to thank all of you for your concern and your prayers. I could not go to the Winter Quilt Show, so my BF's in my Play Group brought me a beautiful hand made basket. It is the most beautiful basket I have ever owned. I have a weakness, of sorts, for baskets. It is because of the caring of each other that we are able to make it through.I was at my first Board meeting of the year this month and it was a pleasure to welcome our new Officers: Roberta Trammell, Vice President and Michelle Lynch, Treasurer. Our new Committee Chairs:Wilma DeBerry, Community Projects and Brenda Daniel, Programs. They are a delightful addition to the Board. Georjana Mauldin is our new Publicity Chair and we will probably start hearing from her next month. I want to thank Carole Pence for Presiding over the Board meeting in January.Hopefully my life is going to settle down enough for me to catch my breath and get on with doing the things I enjoy.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Nancy Baysinger
We had 66 people attend the January meeting, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Renewal of membership is going well; I have received 88 as of Feb. 4, 2008. This includes 10 new members.
You must have your 2008 dues paid by March 1 to be a current member and be listed in the directory. After March 1, you are considered delinquent, I'm sure that no one wants that designation!
You may pay at the Feb.18 meeting, or you may mail them to me. My home address is 222 Crest Pl. Norman, OK 73071. I will also get them if you send them to NAQG, PO Box 5221, Norman, OK 73069.
Please print out the membership form on our website www.normanareaquiltersguild.org. If all information in the 2007 directory is correct, you need only to put your name on the form and note no changes. If you need something changed, please put that information on the form. Checks are easier for me to handle, but I will also accept cash.
Programs
Brenda DanielI know that I have a tough act to follow, but Sabrina has promised that she’ll let me pick her brain freely, and that was a big confidence-booster.I hope we’ll all have a lot of fun with our programs this year.
Our program on February 18 will be presented by Brenda Esslinger.(She’s “Brenda E.,” I’m “Brenda D.,” we’re both “Brenda Lee” and we get a kick out of that!)Brenda Esslinger is a local quilter and former co-owner of My Sister's Quilt in Edmond. She will be talking to us about a technique she is currently developing which she calls "Fracturing."Brenda is also in the process of writing a book on this topic which she plans to have ready for distribution in time for Fall Quilt Market.I’ve seen some of what she’s done with this technique, and it can create very exciting quilts! We’re not doing a workshop on the 18th (it was a scheduling issue), but I’m going to be asking about your interest in getting Brenda E. back to Norman later in the year for a workshop for us.
At our March meeting on the 17th, Janet Noever, PhD, will be presenting her program:“Seminole Patchwork as the ‘Mother’ of Quick Quiltmaking.”Dr. Noever will briefly present the background of the Florida Seminole Indians and how and why their patchwork evolved. She will relate the important economic role of the women of the tribe, as well as the role played by the Indian traders’ wives and one woman missionary. She will bring you up to date on the concern about the future of Seminole patchwork in the tribe itself, and how some very “happy news” may bring about its decline within the tribe.
Dr. Noever will also be teaching a Seminole Patchwork workshop, using her original pattern, “Baby Rattlers,” on Monday March 17.If you wish to participate in this workshop, a sign-up sheet will be available at the February 18 meeting or you can mail a note and your check for $25 (workshop fee) to me at PO Box 6516, Moore, OK 73153.You can also contactat or by phone at 405-912-4253, but I’ll still need the workshop fee to finalize your attendance at Dr. Noever’s Seminole Patchwork workshop.
Baby Rattlers
Ways & MeansAdrianne FoxThanks to everyone who came by the tables in January to purchase something.I will be having a sale this month but you have to search for the right items. On the price tag there is a price and a month and year (7-07, etc.).Look for tags that are dated 06-07 or earlier and those items are 1/2 price and magazines will be 2 for $.25.See how much you can save!Hope you are getting your quilts ready for our show in May - as for me, I have had "Quilter's Block" and have been unable to get myself motivated to even go into the sewing room. However, last night I went in there and made some progress!!!I now have a top up on the dining room wall and it is looking good.
See you the 18th.
Care and ShareEarlene & RuthJim Kenderdine went to see his surgeon this week and he told Jim that for the first time he knew for sure Jim would make it through this. He has a long way to go, but he is healing faster than any one expected. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Beverly Long. Losing your Mom is one of life's toughest experiences. If you know of any situation that a member is experiencing please tell Earlene or me.But only if you feel it would be appropriate. Community ProjectsWilma DeBerryThe January Saturday Workday was a great success!Twenty people attended and most stayed the entire day.We started the day with 18 completed quilts and 10 tops ready for quilting. At the end of the day we had 36 completed quilts, ten more sandwiched and ready for quilting and another set of tops ready for the next work day.No matter how you look at this, it adds up to a BIG SUCCESS.We are currently considering plans for future special days and I welcome your ideas. We want to make it possible for everyone to attend at least one work day this year.
-What days are good for you?-Do you know of other available locations that you would like to see us use?
Look in our Directory for my address, etc.You can call me, e-mail me, or send a letter!I want and need your input.
Also, we are currently in need of large batting pieces and large plastic containersfor storage.Check you stash and see what you can spare.
Quilt Show Entries Are In!
Michelle Lynch
Thank you to all who sent in entries for the quilt show. We will hang more quilts than ever before this year, and there is a wonderfully wide variety of styles and colors...should make for a really good show. Next month's newsletter will have details about procedures for bringing the quilts for the show. The preferred time will be before the April 21 Guild Meeting, but there will be options for those few who cannot come that evening. Be sure to be watching for the details. BY-LAWS Committee Nancy Baysinger
The first meeting of the By-Laws committee was held on Feb. 4. Committee members attending were Nancy Baysinger, Dianne Baumann, Cheryl Heinrichs, and Earlene Kenderdine. We had a lot of discussion on Article VII-Elected Officers. The By-Laws are in the back of the directory. We would like to poll the membership with the following question:Do you think that if 2 year terms for elected officers (Pres., Vice Pres., Sec. & Treas.) were changed to one year you would be more likely to run for office?
Please reply by going to www.normanareaquiltersguild.org, Click on contacts, and then click on Nancy Baysinger. If you do not have internet access, you may call me or leave a message if I am not available. If you have any other comments on any of the By-Laws, you may contact me the same way. Remember this is your guild and your opinion counts. I know that By-Laws are not an exciting topic, but they are important, if you have not read them, now is the time.
The next meeting of the By-Laws Committee is scheduled for March 3, 6:00 PM at McFarlin.
Roberta Trammell’s AdventureLast week, a short family trip was extended for a visit to Whitesboro, Texas. The Kaleidoscope Quilt Shop was calling my name. Whitesboro is south of Madill and Kingston, OK.When you enter the store you have a sense of wonder, like Alice in Wonderland. The shop is small by some standards, but it is surprising. There is a large amount to fabric. The fabrics are arranged in a pleasing manner. Close to or under the bolts are the fat quarters for the corresponding bolts.Patterns and other quilting supplies are easy to locate. The shop is long and narrow, but is well lighted and very well displayed. The owner, Dorothy Sluder, and her staff are very helpful and friendly. They make shopping a quiet and fulfilling visit. The shop was featured in the October 2007, of Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sampler. Since that time the shop has expanded by removing a wall to increase their space. Well done ladies! Is this a “go again trip”? You bet! Try a very nice shop and enjoy the unrushed smaller town feel.PSST-----Gainesville is only about 20 minutes down the road.

I have been quilting since 1981 and have been a member of the guild for two years.I love my guild and I love my Community Projects Committee.I look forward to learning, working, making a lot of mistakes and being forgiven for them.
One of the perks of getting older is that people tend to just shake their heads and say, "Poor old thing, she can't help it.She doesn't know any better.Bless her heart."
